Introducing ETD’s new Driving Awareness Course
ETD is pleased to announce the release of its Driving Awareness Course, which provides fleets of drivers with up-to-date information on safe working practices and the current legislation for drivers in the UK.
ETD’s Managing Director Phil Gutteridge says: ‘This is another great online training course to offer companies within the UK that have a number of fleet drivers. Currently, with the Speed Awareness and Lone Remote Worker modules, this new Driving Awareness Course adds to this knowledge of “Safe Driving”.’
Why driving awareness is essential
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that over one-third of all road traffic accidents and over 500 deaths a year involve someone who was working at the time. This implies that one of the most dangerous things many people do at work is drive. It is estimated that over 100 people are killed or seriously injured each week in the UK because of accidents involving driving or riding for work.
Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) research shows that accident rates are nearly 50% higher for business drivers than for private motorists of the same age and sex. Over two-thirds of those who drive for work are involved in activities other than carrying passengers or goods. 40% of these drivers are involved in sales, drive to attend meetings or drive for general business activities.
According to the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR), road accidents are the biggest cause of work-related accidental death in the UK. Over 500 people die annually due to work-related road accidents compared to approximately 130 fatalities due to other work-related accidents.
In addition to road safety issues, moving vehicles within the workplace (such as delivery vans and forklift trucks), particularly in areas where drivers interact with pedestrians, are significant causes of work-related accidents and death.
Reducing work-related deaths on the roads
Policymakers aim to reduce work-related deaths on public roads by improving employers’ awareness of the issue through public safety campaigns and by encouraging the police to prosecute people who commit serious driving offences.
Meanwhile, ETD’s Driving Awareness Course provides all the guidance drivers need to best protect themselves and others on the road.
