The dangerous bacterium Legionella causes Legionnaires’ disease, an infection that can lead to pneumonia. The disease affects around 5% of those who are exposed to the bacterium, and 1/8 cases become fatalities. Warm aerosol producing systems often spread the disease. Therefore, all establishments using such systems must train their staff on how to protect themselves and others.

Those most at risk of Legionnaires’ disease include diabetics, smokers, those who consume a high level of alcohol, those taking immunosuppressant drugs, those aged 45+ and those who have cancer, chronic respiratory disease or kidney disease.
